Air Conditioning Tricks

Air Conditioning functions by replacing hot air from inside a building to the outside air. To do this some some basic refrigeration principles need to take place. One of the most important pieces that make this happen is the condenser coil. This is usually the aluminum coil the environs the air conditioning compressor.

What happens inside this outdoor unit is a very fundamental state change of the refrigerant inside the air conditioning unit. The refrigerant that transforms from a liquid to a gas inside the indoor coil moves to the outside where the compressor compresses the gas under high pressure. When this occurs the gas also turns out to be extremely hot. The heated gas then departs the compressor to begin moving through the many feet of tubing in the condenser coil. As the gas cools it transforms again to a liquid state going back indoors to start the cycle once more.

Big problems start if the condenser coil becomes so blocked up with grime that the heated air in the condenser coil does not cool sufficiently to change the hot air back to a liquid form. If this happens the cooling process does not occur and then air conditioner functions but is not cooling.

The compressor starts to get so hot and the final result will be the end of a compressor. Because of these reasons the condenser coil must be maintained sanitary and free of debris at all times when the air conditioner is running. Cleaning the coil is a fairly simple procedure, Here are a few strategies to follow when doing this. To wash the coil a number of simple tools are required. A garden hose with a nozzle, wrenches to remove the condenser fan, a garden sprayer for applying the cleaning liquid. The initial thing is to disconnect the electrical cord to the outdoor unit.

There must be an off switch of some kind close to the condenser. After that remove the fan from the condenser unit. Usually this will be the top of the unit. The fan can usually be laid away carefully without disconnecting the wires to the motor.

Cautiously wet down the coil with the garden hose. If you have very elevated pressure water where you live be cautious that the water pressure does not bend over the fins on the coil. These are very slim and fragile.
