Every mother wants what is best for her baby. Deciding on the most comfortable and supportive baby crib mattress is an often overlooked factor when preparing the nursery for a new arrival. Although the baby crib mattress needs a certain amount of consideration, the basic choice is between two types of mattress; innerspring and foam.

Innerspring and foam mattresses are quite different, familiarize yourself with the differences. The innerspring mattress is heavier, much more complex, and has more bounce to it. Remember that your baby crib mattress will be used for about a year, and perhaps even longer if the crib can convert to a small bed.

Although comfortable, a playful child might be tempted to use an innerspring mattress as a trampoline.

An innerspring baby crib mattress combines layers of steel coils, insulation and foam cushioning. The weight of the steel coils determine how firm or soft a baby crib mattress is. To prevent your baby from rolling around, purchase a high durability mattress, it is worth spending that little extra to get your hands on a high quality mattress. The more coils and supportive steel rods in the mattress, and the heavier it is, the firmer, safer and more durable the mattress will be.

Foam baby crib mattresses are simpler in their design, yet can be just as effective as a innerspring one. Again, it is worth making sure you buy a top end mattress to ensure your baby’s safety and comfort. A foam mattress is one layer of polyurethane foam, in a protective cover. The higher the density, the better quality the mattress. Quality can be easily checked by pressing into the mattress. You shouldn’t be able to feel through it and the indent where you pressed should quickly return to the normal appearance.

Firmness is essential in a baby’s bed. Especially when an infant is very small, it is the baby crib mattress which supports it’s delicate body and developing back. The consideration you put into choosing a baby mattress should take into account the density, whether it be the weight and number of coils or the density of the foam layer.

Whatever type of mattress you choose for your baby’s crib, it is of the greatest importance to check that it fits your frame. As most cribs and mattresses are sold separately, make sure you buy the mattress with the right measurements. Ideally, there should be no gap between the mattress and the frame.

Either a innerspring or foam baby crib mattress would be suitable. At the end of the day, it comes down to quality. A better choice would be a high quality mattress, out lasting it’s usefulness, and better for your baby’s well being.
