Buying A Bird – Six Helpful Tips To Get You Started
What to start with?
First we have to consider the following :
How much can I afford?
When buying a parrot, its price would often depend on the species you are planning to buy. A budgie, for instance, can be purchased at less than ten dollars. Cockatiels are slightly more expensive, at around $25 to $35. An Amazonian parrot and grey parrot can be purchased for about 300 – 400$, cockatoo for 1,000 $…… and the price of some parrots reaches $15,000! This is one of the initial questions which you have to answer.
Will the bird have enough space to stay in?
Larger birds and even some of the small ones are very active physically and need big cages and space in which to play.
Is there any free time for the bird?
Probably this is the most important question. Birds can be considered precocious and playful, more social than other animals. Will you be predisposed to play with your bird on a regular basis? Can you take care of it? Will it have the chance to be a part of your family? Take note that birds have quite a lengthy lifespan. Twenty years would be modest for a small cockatiel parrot, for instance. But these birds have nothing on Amazona and African grey parrots – these two particular species can live up to a hundred years, with 50 to 60 years being the most common lifespan. Can you devote to this? If so, remember that birds can often last several generations. If you think you may soon tire of your bird, then you can divert your attention to other pets.
Will your bird make a lot of noise? If so, will it be a bane to the neighbors?
Budgies and cockatiel are comparatively quiet. They are suitable to look after in a flat. Moluxco cockatoo could live in flat just if you have neighbors around you and six floors above / below you that like listening screams to cracking their ear – drums. And going back to the quieter side of things, African grey parrots don’t make much noise. There is no doubt that all birds are different in their own way. Cockatoos may be noisy but nature, but it is randomly possible that there might be one that is just as silent as a church congregation. If really there could be found such, an enterprising person could make a fortune of it. But noise, if you come to think of it, is relative in nature. One person’s idea of noise, say, heavy metal, or for purposes of this article, a bird’s wailing, may be something the other person wouldn’t mind the slightest bit.
How ” destructive ” could a bird be?
Do you own some antique furniture, or had some handed down? Or a collection of vintage sports annuals, comic books or whatnot? Remember that these birds have strong beaks,. Some birds may not have much interest in nibbling on things, but others may consider the nibble an everyday part of life.
Do you need special food for your parrot?
Take lory parrots, for instance – their diet is different from others. Ask yourself whether you are able to find and buy such food. Once you have made a preliminary investigation and have decided what kind of parrot you want, you can go looking for it and buy it. NEVER, NEVER BUY A PARROT IMPULSIVELY!
