Hypnosis – Unraveling The Mysteries Behind It

Myths have always chased hypnosis and its therapeutic arm, hypnotherapy. Some consider them to be some sort of spell while others hesitate to even acknowledge them. Some of the common misconceptions linked with hypnosis and the reality behind them are given below.

Hypnosis has nothing to do with magic spells of any kind. Psychology and several other scientific disciplines have an important role to play in the hypnotic method, and it is very easy to acquire and practice. People refuse to believe in hypnosis even after seeing participants successfully undergoing it in public shows. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Hypnosis can in fact be successfully practised on people who are mentally tough and are trying their best to avoid the spell.

Another false belief about hypnosis that people have made up arbitrarily is that it is an alternate state of consciousness. A person under hypnosis does not get segregated from the outside world, but remains completely conscious of the happenings around him. During the hypnotic state, the subject relaxes completely and is thus able to focus fully on the suggestions provided by the practitioner.

Some scientific discoveries have claimed that only about 5% of humanity is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. Researchers have hit upon this low percentage because they have made use of the same hypnosis procedure on all people without considering their individual traits. Hypnosis can’t be oversimplified like that and clicks only if there are different methodologies for different personality styles.

Meditation and hypnosis are usually confused with each other. However, meditation is a purely personal feeling that has got no involvement of communication, on the other hand communication is a fundamental part of any successful hypnosis. Trance too is not related to hypnosis at all. The individual doesn’t interact to achieve a state of trance, while hypnosis is impossible without communication.

It is commonly thought that hypnosis training or hypnotherapy cannot bring transformations in physique or in patterns of conduct of an individual. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is abnormal to the body. However, it can propel the body to a better shape through behavioural changes like eating less, and quitting smoking and other addictive habits by ensuring a good amount of of motivation in a person.

Hypnosis, and particularly hypnotherapy, can have an important function to play in the overall welfare of a person, and not giving them a try just because of some false notions is an act of folly.
