Many different types of dog collars are available for the pet owner. Before purchasing a new collar, you should know about what is available. You should also determine the purpose for the collar so you can find one to meet your needs.

A nylon dog collar is strong, durable, colorful, easy to clean, soft and flexible. This adjustable collar is the perfect choice for young puppies since the collar can be let out as the dog’s neck grows. It is also strong enough for use with adult dogs and is a great collar for everyday use.

As your pet grows, you may want to invest in a dog harness. The harness can be used in your vehicle to restrain your pet during rides. It is also used for walking your dog without putting pressure on the dog’s neck.

If you have a dog with a rather large neck, and he keeps slipping out of his collar, you may want to consider using a Martingale dog collar. This collar has a sliding section that will tighten as the dog pulls against the leash and release when he stops. This prevents the dog from pulling his head out, but also won’t choke the dog due to the limited closure style.

The traditional training dog collar is sometimes referred to as a choke collar. This is a metal link collar that slides to tighten around the dog’s neck when the dog pulls against it. When used by a careful trainer, this collar is perfectly safe, and is a valuable aid in getting the dog’s attention and obedience. Make sure to put this collar on correctly, and only use during training sessions, and never let children use it.

The half check dog collar uses the metal sliding chain like the training collar, and combines them with the fabric covered collar of the Martingale. It is also used on dogs with large neck who pull out of their collars. Since the chain links slide faster than the fabric of the Martingale collar, it can also be used as a training collar and is an especially good choice for use by children.

Another training collar uses prongs that pinch the dog’s neck when he pulls on the leash. Although they looks like cruel spikes, the prongs don’t injure the dog, but merely provide little pinches to get the dog’s attention. This type of training collar can’t choke the dog and is used on dogs that have a high pain threshold who have shown a disregard to the other types of training collars.

Designer dog collars come in many colors and styles. Made from nylon webbing covered with fabric, they come in many prints including dog breeds and holidays. You can have a custom made collar just for your dog.
